Request for Opt-Out Based on Religious Belief
On June 27, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor, which grants parents/guardians the ability to opt their children out of specific instructional materials or lessons that conflict with their sincerely held religious beliefs.
In the San Marcos Unified School District, one of our core goals is to build welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environments where all students can thrive. We also respect and value the role parents/guardians play as partners in the education of their children. When families have questions about instructional materials or lessons used in their child’s classroom, we encourage them to communicate directly with their child’s teacher(s) or site administrator.
For families wishing to opt out of specific instructional materials or lessons due to sincerely held religious beliefs, please complete the opt-out form below and return it to your child's school site office.
